When most people think of Vietnam it is fair to say that they think of the bustling ancient motorcycle filled metropolis that is Hanoi (the nation’s capital). However whilst Hanoi is  awe inspiring and a must see destination, Vietnam should also be remembered for its stunning tropical getaways and white sandy beaches. So with this in mind, let’s take a look at some of the best places to visit if you really fancy escaping far from the maddening crowds.

Phu Quoc Island

Glistening like a jewel in the Gulf of Thailand and situated around 50kms off the southern coast of Vietnam, lies the island of Phu Quoc, the perfect place for a Vietnam holiday. To get here, take a short 50 minute flight from Ho Chi Minh City and be prepared to immerse yourself into paradise. Phu Quoc Island has some of the most picture perfect beaches you will find anywhere in and around Vietnam. White powdery sands, crystal clear blue waters and shady palm trees nestle against the backdrop of around 37,000 hectares of national park and virgin tropical forests, perfect for a family holiday from the UK.

If you fancy a touch more activity, then why not try your hand at scuba diving and snorkelling. Here you can swim in warm waters that are absolutely teaming with colourful marine life. After, exerting yourself (well, just a little!) why not enjoy a meal at one of the islands many fantastic restaurants.

The Mekong Delta

The Mekong Delta is also known as the ‘Rice Basket’ of the country is a tranquil landscape of  green fields, waterways and sleepy villages. These villages are linked by rivulets that flow in criss cross formation which are fed by the mighty Mekong River. This area, which grows enough rice to feed the entire country and have some to spare, also grows sugar cane, coconuts and fruits. The Delta also houses vast quantities of shrimp and as a result most of the area has been intensely farmed. However, that doesn’t mean that there is nothing to see or do here. On the contrary The Delta’s real draw is exploring the quaint riverside villages.

Try sampling fruits that are bartered and sold in the famous floating markets and feast on some great fresh home cooked delicacies before overnighting as a guest in a local lodging. Other highlights include a visit to the flower markets, and the rustic style beach getaway at Hon Chon.
