Backpacking across an untamed landscape is as much a sport as it is an art form. While a considerable level of skill and endurance is involved, the real rewards are the views and the experiences that one is allowed when traversing untamed regions of the world. Thankfully, there are a number of ideal destinations that will offer unforgettable experiences to both novice and experienced hikers.

The Pyrenees, Southern France

These majestic mountains are some of the most famous for hiking and backpacking in all of Europe. Stretching from the Mediterranean coast to central France, the Pyrenees are perfect for all skill levels. While the snow-capped mountains and formidable gorges may attract those seeking a bit of adrenaline in their journey, the rolling green foothills are perfect for a family excursion or for those that may simply wish to partake in clean rural air and view the lush, green landscapes that have made this region famous. One of the best times to travel to the Pyrenees is between March and June, for many fields of flowers can be seen in bloom; their lavender colour seemingly stretching to the horizon.

The Canadian Rockies

This area is considered one of the last untamed wildernesses still in existence. The peaks themselves are some of the highest on the North American continent and should one truly wish to escape civilisation, this region can definitely accommodate this desire. Notwithstanding the spectacular views of pristine forests and unending mountains, a plethora of wildlife can be found here including eagles, moose and the occasional grizzly bear. Due to the remoteness of many locations within this region, travel insurance is a must, for it will give the backpacker a peace of mind in knowing that all concerns are taken care of well in advance of the journey itself.

The King’s Trail, Sweden

This is one of the most popular hiking destinations in all of Europe. As it is situated one hundred miles within the Arctic Circle, the best times to visit are between the months of June and early September. Serpentine trails wind through birch forests, open tundra, monumental glaciers and even pass Sweden’s highest mountain peak that stands at an impressive 6,926 feet above sea level. Tourists abound during July and August, so those backpackers that desire a bit of solitude are advised to visit during early September.

These three destinations are considered some of the most respected and awe-inspiring backpacking routes in the world. As with any such excursion, there is always an element of risk; even on the least challenging trails. A comprehensive travel insurance package is a great way to take one’s mind off of any concerns and instead simply enjoy the unspoiled beauty that these destinations have to offer.
