This Is The Year To Grab Real Cheap Airfares And Luxury Cruises

This year may be the best time in ages to take a well deserved vacation because the travel industry is having financial difficulties in these tough economic times.  You now can find incredibly cheap airfares and last minute flights, exclusive hotels and cheap hotels, family resorts and all inclusive resorts, as well as discount cruises and last minute cruises on the web, or at your local travel agency.  It stands to reason that if any airplane, hotel, resort, or cruise ship is not fully booked, that represents a significant loss of income that can not be recouped, so this is your time to grab the best possible travel deals in years.

When you search for holiday air flights on the internet you should first look at sites that have ticket price listings for multiple airlines.  That way you can compare airfare prices side by side.  If you search for air consolidators you’ll find that they have secured blocks of discount airline fares from a number of airlines.  One of the well-known major discount airlines you should also look up is Southwest Airlines which is not usually included in the air consolidator or multiple commercial airline websites.

If you are planning air travel to Europe there are a number of European airlines that offer incredibly low fares, some as low as $60 U.S., when you fly between countries within Europe.  Ryanair is the top low cost airline in Europe.  It also flies to and from the United States.

Choice hotels, luxury resorts, including all inclusive resorts are now offering amazing bargains as they try to maintain full occupancy.  On the internet you can search the words, hotels, or hotel finder to locate multiple discount hotel rates.  The same also applies to resorts.  If you want to take your pet on vacation with you, just search pet friendly hotels.

Another great source for reasonable accommodations are vacation rentals.  These can include home owners who own recreational property such as holiday homes, cottages, or condos and now need to rent them because of the slow economy.  There are also beach vacation rentals available at substantial discounts.

Luxury cruises at really great discounts abound.  One of the major advantages that Americans have is that the cruise lines are increasing their presence by adding a few more ports and increasing some sailings on both the East and West coasts of the United States.  Cruise tours are generally comprised of both a cruise and land tour.  You can opt for taking the cruise first to a destination port and then continue with the land portion of the tour.  Or, vice versa.  You can take the land excursion first and then board your ship for the luxury cruise.    If this is your first cruise, or you’re not really sure what you want in a cruise, it may be advantageous to deal with a travel agency that specializes in cheap cruises like a cruise consolidator, by searching that phrase, or by booking with a local travel agency that has extensive experience in booking cruises.

Cruises are more complicated then booking cheap flights or cheap hotel rooms because there are numerous options which can be confusing to many first time cruisers.  Some items to consider are the choice of state rooms (inside, ocean view, and balcony), deck location of the state rooms, and dinner sitting options except on ships that have anytime dining, etc.  Keep in mind that it doesn’t matter if you opt for the least expensive accommodation, you are always entitled to use all the standard amenities on the cruise ship.  All quoted prices are usually based on double occupancy.  Always make sure that you are aware of the total cost of your cruise including all government fees and port charges.

When you book any vacation travel deals or holiday travel packages, it’s always best to pay with a credit card.  That way you will have a record of all your trip transactions just in case a dispute arises with a bill, or a travel supplier runs into financial difficulty.  It’s highly unlikely the latter would happen, but if it does you’ll have a better chance of being reimbursed or rebooked.

Can Seasickness Be A Problem When You Take A Holiday On A Luxury Cruise Ship?

Modern cruise ships have dramatically lessened the problem of seasickness.  Today’s larger ships slice through the waves instead of riding on top of them.  Also, new technologies like stabilizers, which look like large underwater fins, and counterbalancing systems have greatly reduced any pitch and rolling motion of the ships, all but neutralizing the problem of seasickness.  In addition, cruise ships use radar to help them steer clear or outrun bad weather and potential hurricanes.

Research shows that even in very rough weather, less than three percent of all cruise passengers experience any symptoms of seasickness.   Women and children seem to be more prone to seasickness, while seniors are less susceptible.  Some symptoms of seasickness are nausea, stomach cramps and vomiting.  However, if you think you have a severe seasickness problem, you may want to book an inside cabin located on a lower deck and in the middle of the ship.  This is the area of the ship where the least rocking motion is felt.  If you are planning to book a trans-Atlantic cruise, it is possible that an ocean crossing may be rough at certain times during the year.

Seasickness happens when the brain receives conflicting messages which causes an imbalance in the receptors in the inner ear.  When standing or walking on a moving surface a signal occurs in the brain saying something is wrong.  These mixed signals can result in a feeling of dizziness, headache, clammy skin, nausea, and vomiting.  As soon as the ship starts moving it is a good idea to go out on deck and walk around.  Keep focusing your eyes on the horizon.  Your knees may feel wobbly but keep walking as this will help you get your “sea legs”.  Even the fresh sea breezes will help you feel better.  And if you must eat, eat light.  Until you are feeling better, do not eat a heavy meal as it will only make you feel worse.

Motion sickness doesn’t only occur on cruise ships.  It can happen when you are in a car, bus, train, or on an airplane, anytime you are subjected to motion.
If needed, the ship’s doctor can prescribe medication such as Benadryl, Bonine, or Dramamine tablets that  will  treat  nausea,  vomiting,  and  dizziness,  the  worst symptoms  of  motion  sickness.  There is another very effective, physician prescribed, anti-seasickness product called Transderm ScopIt is a small patch that is placed behind each ear.  These patches can lessen the effects of, or even prevent, motion sickness and should be worn at least eight hours before you cruise.  The above drugs can cause a variety of side effects such as dry mouth, drowsiness, and dizziness.  A drug free way to counteract seasickness is an acupuncture session.  This treatment works well and is available on some ships that have a registered acupuncturist on board.

Sea-Bands, which apply a gentle pressure to the acupressure points on both your wrists also work well.  They have been clinically tested to help provide relief from nausea and vomiting caused by motion sickness when traveling, pregnancy, anesthesia, chemotherapy, and any condition that may induce vomiting.  Smaller sized Sea-Bands are also available for children.  They can be bought in drug stores and pharmacies as well as most travel oriented stores and do not require a prescription.  They do not cause any side effects so can be used safely, again and again, whenever you feel nauseous.  They can also be purchased online at, or at a number of stores in the United States, such as Brooks, Osco, K-Mart, Eckerd, Kerr Drug, Longs, Rite Aid, Stop & Shop, CVS, Savon, Walgreens, and Walmart.

It is a good idea to see your family doctor before you depart on your cruise if you feel that you may be susceptible to seasickness.  It’s better to get a prescription for seasickness medication from your physician and purchase any over-the-counter anti-motion products such as Transderm Scopolamine, Dramamine, Bonine, or Benadryl because even though you can get them onboard ship they will probably be more expensive.  Another remedy that can work well for most passengers are ginger capsules.  They are a great preventative measure, but are more effective if they’re taken before you sail.  Their effectiveness lasts for approximately eight hours, and have been proven to help reduce or even eliminate the feeling of nausea.

Some words of caution.  A health care professional such as a physician, or pharmacist should always be consulted about prescription drug dosages and their possible side effects.  There also can be side effects caused by some drug combinations, even with over-the-counter medications.

What Are Pod Hotels And Can They Save You Money When You Travel On Vacation?

Pod hotels are not a new phenomenon.  They have been around for many years, but most travelers have never heard of them.  The concept started in Japan as “capsule hotels”, that were, and are still being used mainly by traveling businessmen on stopovers.  However, pod hotels are becoming more and more popular with vacation and holiday travelers as well, because they are convenient and cost a lot less than regular hotels.  They can be found in the United States, Britain, Europe, and Asia, usually conveniently located in, or near to major airports.

The pod hotel concept is just in its infancy in the U.S. and Europe, but is growing by leaps and bounds as more and more business and holiday travelers demand this unique service.  Entrepreneurs are responding by creating very small, pod-like hotel rooms that are usually rented by the hour, or number of hours at a fraction of the cost of regular hotel rooms.

Most pod hotel rooms are small, but comfortable and convenient, and they can have all the amenities of a regular hotel room.  They can be a good choice for budget-conscious business travelers and vacationers.

Some pod hotels are located at airports such as the ones at, situated in London’s Heathrow and Gatwick Airports. have pod hotels in London, Zurich, Basal, and Budapest. have pod hotels located in Amsterdam and Antwerp.  A New York pod hotel is the

There is a new concept in pod hotels called Metronap Sleep Pods.  These space age styled pods are springing up not only on the concourses of airports, but in strategic locations in office buildings.  They are perfect for tourists and business travelers, as well as tired people and executives that just want to have a short nap.  Even though these sleep pods are situated out in the open, they partially enclose for privacy, but are not claustrophobic.  They are also equipped with noise canceling headphones.  The rental cost is by the hour and is reasonably priced.

Although this brand new sleeping accommodation is actually a hostel and not technically a pod hotel it is worth mentioning especially if you are traveling with one or two other people.  It is called The Jumbo Hostel.  There is a very good reason for its name.  You see, it is an actual real Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet airplane which has been converted into a twenty-five room hostel.  Each room has three beds.  The rooms are approximately six square meters (a little larger than six square yards) in size and about three meters high (about nine feet) from the floor to the ceiling.  Each of the rooms has a flat screen TV and access to wireless broadband.  There is also a luxury suite located in the converted cockpit that has a panoramic view of all the air traffic at the airport.

This Jumbo jet even has a neat café inside where vacationers can get a drink and a bite to eat.  Travelers on holiday can even walk out onto one of the wings!  Don’t worry, you won’t fall off as there is a railing.

If you are visiting, or on a stopover in Stockholm and stay at the Jumbo Hostel, you don’t have to take a taxi to catch your flight as it’s only a very short walk to the airport’s main terminal.  And if you are not planning to stay at the Jumbo Hostel it might be a fun adventure, especially if you are with children, to visit this magnificent plane and have breakfast or a meal or just a cup of coffee in the café.

And guess where this cool Jumbo Jet airliner landmark is located.  At the entrance to Stockholm’s Arlanda International airport where over seventeen million travelers pass through each year.  This great concept has been created by entrepreneur Oscar Dioes and is Arlanda’s first hostel.

This is probably the only commercial airliner in the world where travelers are guaranteed not to get jet lag or have to worry about overcoming the fear of flying.  To find out more about this unique alternative accommodation, visit

Can Travelers Save Money On Gas By Using Nitrogen Instead of Air In Their Vehicles’s And RV’s Tires?

Not only can travelers save money on gasoline by replacing the air in their vehicle’s and RV’s tires with nitrogen gas, they can save money on their every day driving as well.  Research shows that drivers can improve their gas mileage by over three percent when they use nitrogen in their motor vehicle’s tires.

This is not a new technology as it has been used for many years by commercial airlines as well as in NASCAR cars.  The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) mandates that nitrogen gas be used in all commercial aircraft tires to eliminate the possibility of water vapor freezing at high altitudes which happens with air filled tires.  The NASCAR teams use nitrogen in the tires of their racing cars because the tire pressure fluctuates less than it does with air.

How can using nitrogen gas in your vehicle’s tires save you a lot of money?

First of all, you do not need to buy new tires to make the change, your present tires will be fine.  By using nitrogen gas in your tires you can improve your vehicle’s fuel efficiency and save a lot of money in the process.  Nitrogen in your tires also improves your vehicle’s handling and extends the life of your tires so you will have to replace them less often.  There is no question that in this era of record high gasoline prices you will reap significant savings on all your driving for many years to come.

How can using nitrogen gas in your vehicle’s tires also benefit our environment?

By using nitrogen gas instead of air in you vehicle’s tires, it will help to better maintain proper tire air pressure.  This optimizes tire road contact which reduces tire/road resistance.  Because of this, the fuel economy is increased and less exhaust emissions enter into the atmosphere.  You might say that by going green you are also saving green, greenbacks, that is.

How can you do your part to help America’s economy reduce its dependence on foreign oil?

Current research shows that if every driver in the United States replaced the air in each of their vehicle’s tires with nitrogen gas, they would improve their gas mileage by over three percent.  This translates into a whopping saving of almost four trillion gallons of gasoline per year!

For more information and research data on the growing use of nitrogen gas in motor vehicles’ tires including those of commercial carriers, visit Get Nitrogen at their website,  In addition to the research, you will find a growing list of registered dealers located in the United States and Canada that can replace the air in your tires with nitrogen.

Here are some important points on how you can save gas and reduce green house gas emissions at the same time by not driving on under inflated tires, whether you are using air or nitrogen gas in them.

Firstly, check your vehicle owner’s manual for the optimum tire pressure.

Use a tire gauge to accurately measure tire pressure.  A visual tire inspection is not reliable.

Only measure tire pressure when they are cold.  You should wait approximately three hours for the air inside your tires to cool down before measuring the tire air pressure.

Lastly, and probably the most important point, always check the air pressure in your vehicle’s tires at least once a month.

What Should Vacationers And Business Travelers Look For When Buying Travel Luggage?

I’m sure that most travelers have at one time or another bought inexpensive travel luggage that literally fell apart after only a few years of traveling on holidays.  It seems that most times in life you get what you pay for, so it may make a lot of sense to invest in a more expensive, but very durable set of luggage.  Quality counts.  And, in the long run you can save a lot of money by not continually buying cheaply made luggage.

Always buy wheel-equipped luggage, including your carry-on.  You should make sure that the telescopic handles will lock in both the low and high positions.  If you are a tall person, you don’t want to have to stoop over just to pull your luggage along.

One of the top-of-the-line, wheeled, nineteen inch roller board carry-ons is TravelPro’s FlightPro4.  Another excellent top brand is Tumi.

Carry a set of luggage bungee cords with you so you can tie down any piggybacked luggage if you have to.

What important features should you be looking for when purchasing larger-sized luggage?

Soft-sided luggage is superior to hard-sided suitcases as the locks on the latter can easily break open when your luggage is thrown around.  Luggage handlers are not noted for being gentle when it comes to transferring luggage from place to place.  The luggage should be made of strong, durable, 1,000 denier cordura nylon or polyester, and have double or triple stitching as well as extra reinforcing at all stress points.  Each piece of luggage should have a padded, expandable handle that locks into both short and long handle positions.  The luggage should also be light-weight, expandable, and have outside pockets.  Brightly colored luggage is easier to pick out as it circles around the carousel.  Lastly, your luggage should have large zippers and wide, rubber, recessed wheels.
Please note that if you purchase luggage that has detachable handles or straps, it is advisable to take them off before you check them in at the airport as they can easily get hung up on the airport conveyer belts.

What are the features that you should you look for when you buy a backpack?

A backpack should be lightweight and feel comfortable while wearing it when it is full.  A gender-specific design and a built-in lumbar support will greatly increase your comfort.  It should have a weather resistant polyurethane coating, a zip-off day pack, outside and inside pockets as well as a hip belt with pockets, and adjustable, padded, wide straps.  The carrying capacity of a backpack should be approximately 4,000 to 5,000 cubic inches.

Some backpacks have a light-weight steel mesh grid sewn inside of them to prevent your valuable personal items from falling out if it is slashed by a robber while it is being worn.

A few of the best backpack brand names are ArcTeryx, REI, and of course, GoLite.

A number of informative luggage reviews can be researched on the web at

Air Flights – How Can You Avoid Deep Vein Thrombosis When You Are On Vacation?

Commercial air flights cause airline passengers’ blood to become thicker and slow down, especially in the lower extremities, which can increase the possibility of developing blood clots.  The longer the flight, the greater the medical risk.  Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is caused by a blood clot forming in one of a person’s legs.  This is a very serious medical emergency.  If this dangerous clot breaks off, it may travel to the lungs which could be fatal.

A common misconception is that younger, physically fit athletes are less likely to develop deep vein thrombosis.  Recent scientific research indicates that many people with a slower at rest blood flow, such as athletes, are actually more at risk than the general population.  Having a history of swollen legs can also be a factor.  Other people at risk are those that have, or have had, a serious medical condition such as heart disease, diabetes, or cancer.  Also, women that are pregnant, or on birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy, tend to be more prone to deep vein thrombosis.  Obesity can also be a factor.

There are actually two sets of symptoms pertaining to deep vein thrombosis that you should be aware of.  The first milder set of symptoms may appear during your flight or within the following couple of days.  These symptoms are redness, swelling, tenderness, or cramps in one of your lower legs, or some swelling or bruising behind one of your knees.  The second set of symptoms are more severe and usually appear within two or more days after a blood clot has formed.  They are fainting, shortness of breath, rapid or painful breathing, chest pain which can be accompanied by pain in the shoulder, coughing up blood, and a fever.

What can contribute to these serious symptoms?

Deep vein thrombosis can occur in your lower legs anytime you are sitting in one position for a long time without moving your legs and feet.  Some research shows that you are at three times the risk of developing this very serious medical condition when you fly.  Driving, traveling by bus or train, or even sitting in your favorite easy chair at home can also cause it.

How can you, as an airline passenger, lessen or prevent this life-threatening condition from happening?

You can help prevent deep vein thrombosis from developing by increasing the circulation in your legs.  If you are predisposed to any of the above risks, you may want to book an aisle seat to give you a little more room to move and enable you to easily get up and walk around at anytime without disturbing your fellow passengers.

Many experts suggest that when you fly you should wear loose clothing and avoid wearing tight fitting slacks or pants, as well as elastic support socks or stockings; moving and exercising your legs frequently while sitting; changing your sitting position often; not sitting with you legs crossed; walking up and down the aisle every half-hour or so, and drinking a sports drink such as Gatorade so you do not become dehydrated.

It is very common for deep vein thrombosis to be misdiagnosed which could be fatal.  If you develop any of the above symptoms you must seek medical help immediately.  Inform the doctor who is treating you that have just recently flown and you think that it could be a blood clot.  If the physician doesn’t believe it is deep vein thrombosis, ask him to order an ultrasound of your leg to be sure.  If you are experiencing any chest problems, insist that he or she do a simple and painless blood oxygen measurement on your finger.  It only takes a couple of minutes and will prevent a serious misdiagnosis of your condition., is an excellent website.  This professional, non-profit organization is dedicated to your health when you travel on commercial airline flights.  There is a lot of valuable up-to-date information and research on their website about deep vein thrombosis that could save your life.  They also have a free wallet-sized flyer that you can download and take with you when you fly.  This flyer is available in English, French, and Spanish.

Can Vacationers Enjoy Sensational Savings When They Book A Repositioning Cruise Holiday?

Repositioning cruises are not a new phenomenon, they‘re just the best kept secret in the cruising industry.  Just like migrating birds, many cruise ships leave for warmer climates in the Autumn and return in the Spring.  Some sail south to the Southern Hemisphere for the winter months and then sail back to the Northern Hemisphere for the summer months, while other cruise ships sail cross the Atlantic or Pacific Oceans to “reposition” themselves in warmer weather.  Just like most vacationers, these fleets of ships are seeking seasons in the sun.

These specific one-way cruise holidays are offered at incredible discounts to attract new and seasoned cruise lovers alike.  No cruise line wants to ever have the expense of moving a huge ship across hundreds or thousands of miles of ocean without having any paying cruise passengers onboard.  This is an opportunity for vacationers to get a luxury dream cruise for a bargain basement price.

A repositioning cruise is not a stripped down version of a luxury cruise.  It is a luxury cruise!  All passengers enjoy the same meals, the same entertainment, and have the same onboard privileges.  And your deeply discounted ticket, sometimes costing as low as fifty dollars per day, entitles you to everything that is usually included in a luxury cruise.

The main difference between a standard cruise and a repositioning cruise is that the latter is longer, usually lasting from two to four weeks, with more time spent at sea and fewer, or possibly no ports of call.  This means more relaxing days at sea and a less hectic itinerary.
And on certain repositioning cruises some ships will drop anchor in very unique ports of call that are usually reserved for very expensive world cruise itineraries.

Usually these repositioning cruises take place in the months of September and October, and in March and April.  Some of the destinations in the Winter are Hawaii, the Caribbean, Mexico, South America including the Panama Canal, and Asia.  The destinations in the Summer are Alaska, Canada and New England, and Europe and the Mediterranean.

Depending on the season, vacationers can sail to or from Europe and North America; Alaska and British Columbia, and the United States southwest coast including destinations in Mexico; the East coast of Canada and northern United States, and a number of southern U.S. as well Caribbean destinations.  Some repositioning cruises sail to and from Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.

There are a few important things that you should consider if you want to go on a repositioning cruise.  First is booking an “open jaw” flight where you fly to the departure port of call and then fly home from the cruise ship’s destination port.  These air flights can be pricey compared to the usual return airfares that most travelers are familiar with.  Sometimes it is possible to book your flight through the cruise line, but not always.  Even with the usual extra cost for an open jaw ticket over a regular airline return ticket, a repositioning cruise is still an incredible value for your travel dollar.  However, if you are fortunate to live close by, or within driving distance of your departure port, then you would only have to book a one-way air flight back to your departure port and then drive back home.

When booking your flight it may be advisable to arrive at your departure port a day before you sail and stay at a hotel overnight.  This will avoid the problem of any unforeseen flight delays that can sometimes happen and leave you standing on the pier waving goodbye to a cruise ship that has left without you.

If you think you would enjoy a long, relaxing, luxury cruise then you‘ll love a repositioning cruise which usually is not filled to capacity with passengers and spends more time at sea.

P.S.  Don’t forget your camera and a wardrobe to reflect the possible weather conditions on your cruise.

How Can You Protect Yourself From Serious Food And Water Borne Diseases When You Travel On Vacation?

There are a number of very serious diseases that are caused by contaminated food and water.  Some of these major diseases are dysentery, which can be preceded by traveler‘s diarrhea, hepatitis A, cholera, and typhoid.  These diseases are very prevalent in third world countries, however, people can contract them even in their own home town.  Here is some information that can help you lessen the chance of getting these diseases when you take a tropical holiday.

What precautions can you take to reduce the chance of contracting these serious diseases when you travel?

Drink only bottled water when you are on holidays.  Check to make sure that the seal of the cap has not been broken.  If it shows any sign of being tampering with, do not drink the water.  In many third world countries, it is not uncommon for some street vendors, children, or restaurants to fill water bottles with tap water and offer them to tourists as authentic bottled water.

Ice cubes can be another major source of contaminated water.  Unlike bottled water, there is no way that you can determine if the ice cubes in your drink were made from a non-contaminated source of water.  Unless you know for sure the restaurant, or drinking establishment you are at has an impeccable reputation, you should not use ice cubes in your drinks.

When you are on a tropical vacation it is advisable to avoid eating any uncooked foods such as salads as they are another major source of these diseases.

How do people usually contract traveler’s diarrhea?

Traveler’s diarrhea is usually caused by contaminated food or water, but it can also be caused by stress or a change of location when traveling.  Some symptoms are gas, nausea, upset stomach, cramps and a liquid stool.

What should you do if you get traveler’s diarrhea?

You should drink a lot of purified water and soda or pop to prevent dehydration.  These symptoms usually subside within two or three days, if these symptoms persist or get more severe, you should get medical help immediately as you may have one of two more serious conditions, bacteria, or amoeba dysentery.

What are some of the symptoms of dysentery?

Severe headaches, a high fever, stomach cramps, vomiting, blood and/or mucous in the stool are the usual symptoms of both bacteria and amoeba caused dysentery.  Both types of dysentery can be very serious medical conditions if left untreated.  You must seek medical help as soon as possible.

What is the difference between hepatitis A and B?

Hepatitis A is a highly infectious disease that is spread through contaminated food and water (including ice cubes).  Hepatitis B is spread in the same way that the HIV virus is spread, by infected blood or body fluids through sexual contact, a transfusion, or a cut or break in the skin.   Both diseases have similar symptoms which may include a fever, chills, headaches, feeling fatigued, aches and pains, nausea and vomiting, stomach cramps, lack of appetite, dark colored urine and light colored feces.  Jaundiced skin and yellow whites of the eyes are also common symptoms.  If you get some, or all of these symptoms you must seek medical help as soon as possible.  However, as a precaution, it would make sense to see your local health authority before you travel on vacation and get vaccinated against both of these diseases.  Remember that your first line of defense is to get vaccinations to protect yourself against hepatitis A and B before  traveling.

It is advisable to check with your local health authority to find out if you need to be vaccinated prior to leaving on your trip.  Some countries you plan to visit may require an up to date vaccination certificate.  Even if they don’t, it still makes good sense to be vaccinated as hepatitis A is a highly infectious disease.  Hepatitis B can lead to AIDS.  Both diseases attack the liver.  There is a vaccination called Twinrix which protects you from both hepatitis A and B.  You can find out more about this vaccination at

What should you do if you get cholera?

Cholera causes diarrhea, which can lead to very severe dehydration and possibly death.  This disease is transmitted through contaminated food and water.  As immunization is not considered effective, you have to practice good hygiene.

How can you protect yourself against getting typhoid?

Typhoid is a disease that is also contracted through contaminated food and water.  You should be immunized for typhoid if you are traveling to countries where the sanitation is poor.

Lyme Disease – Can It Do More Than Just Tick You Off When You Travel On Vacation?

Travelers, campers, tourists and vacationers alike can be at risk for getting Lyme disease, a serious, debilitating condition caused by being bitten by an infected tick.

What are the symptoms of Lyme disease?

Some of the symptoms of Lyme disease are the classic bull’s-eye red rash, fatigue or loss of energy, feeling sleepy, tingling and numbness, swollen and painful joints, memory loss, and  feeling like you are getting the flu.  Paralysis of the face is a less common symptom.

Lyme disease can make your life miserable and cause you a lot of pain and suffering if it’s not diagnosed and treated right away.  The longer you wait before seeing a health professional allows this disease to progress quickly and it may not be possible to lessen it’s effects.

How is Lyme disease spread?

Ticks bite and feed on animals such as mice, other small rodents, and deer.  If any of these animals are carrying the Lyme disease bacteria, they can pass the bacteria on to the ticks.  When people are bitten by an infected tick they may contract Lyme disease.

How can you reduce the chance of getting Lyme disease?

Some people do not have symptoms that show right away so prevention is always the best policy.  If you are traveling in the spring and summer months to or through areas where deer, mice, other rodents and animals live, the following are some things you can do.

If you are camping on vacation or holidays, you can limit the number of ticks around your campsite by reducing the brush and leaves debris.  Wear light colored clothing so you can more easily see these very tiny black insects and remove them before they attach to your skin.  Be sure you wear long-sleeved shirts and tuck them into your pants.  Also tuck your pant cuffs into your socks.  It is also a good idea to wear rubber boots as ticks are usually found close to the ground.  However, you can also get them in your hair if you brush against leaves on a low tree branch.  Wearing a light-colored, wide-brimmed hat may help.  Be sure to check your skin and scalp carefully as ticks can easily be overlooked, especially in your hair.  Applying a DEET containing insect repellent to your clothes and exposed skin, as well as applying the insecticide permethrin to your clothes will also help.

How can you remove ticks safely?
Ticks that have burrowed and embedded themselves under your skin can be removed with small-tipped tweezers.  Make sure that you do not leave any part of the tick under your skin.  Once the tick has been completely removed, disinfect the wound thoroughly with alcohol or hydrogen peroxide.  Keep in mind that you are not totally out of the woods yet, so to speak, as the symptoms can take several days, even weeks before they show.  Using tweezers is the best and safest method for removing ticks.  Do not try to remove any ticks using burnt matches, petroleum jelly, or alcohol as this will cause the ticks to release more of the bacteria into your blood stream.

Please note that at the present time there is no vaccine available for Lyme disease.

According to the Center For Disease Control And Prevention (CDC) this bacterial disease is vastly under reported, perhaps by well over 100,000 cases per year in the U.S. alone.  You can go to their website at for more information on Lyme disease.

How Can You Protect Yourself From Serious Mosquito Borne Disease When You Travel On Vacation?

The mosquito is a major cause of a number of serious diseases throughout the world.  Five of the most prevalent mosquito borne diseases are Malaria, Yellow Fever, Japanese Encephalitis,  Dengue Fever, and West Nile Virus.

Malaria is the most common of these serious diseases caused by mosquitoes. Well over a million people die from this disease world wide each year.

Just like bed bugs, mosquitoes are attracted by the heat of your body as well as the carbon dioxide that you exhale.  The female mosquitoes deposit their eggs into your bloodstream as they feed on your blood.  These parasite eggs incubate and mature in your liver and then attack your red blood cells.  The first symptoms of malaria usually arise within twenty-four hours.  Some of the symptoms are a high fever, shivers and chills, as well as nausea and vomiting.  These symptoms are usually followed by a deep sleep and then a flare up occurs.  If these symptoms keep repeating themselves every two to three days, you must seek medical attention.
There is an anti-malaria prescription drug that can be taken to help protect you when you are traveling on holidays in mosquito infested tropical climates.  But, to receive the maximum protection, this medication has to be taken before, during, and after your trip.  However, even when taken properly as prescribed, these pills are not always completely effective.

If you get malaria, there are a number of pharmaceutical drugs such as Chloroquine, Doxycycline, Mefloquine, and Fansidar, can be prescribed to treat malaria, but again, they are not always totally effective.  Ask your family doctor or pharmacist more about the dosage and length of time that you should take any of these prescription medications.

You can protect yourself from yellow fever by getting a vaccination from a physician at the local health authority before you travel on your holidays.  This vaccination lasts approximately ten years and is very effective.

Japanese encephalitis is a viral infection that is also transmitted by a bite from an infected mosquito.  This disease can be prevented by a series of three vaccinations.

Dengue fever is another viral disease that is spread by mosquitoes.  There is no vaccination to prevent this disease.
The West Nile Virus is also spread by infected mosquitoes.  There is no vaccine available to protect you from this disease either.

Keep in mind that when it comes to all of the serious mosquito borne diseases, prevention is always better than a cure, even if there happens to be one.  It is always best to limit the chance of being bitten and infected by mosquitoes in the first place.  You should always wear loose fitting, long sleeved shirts and slacks and use a DEET containing insect repellent when mosquitoes become active near dusk.  Also, be sure to kill all the mosquitoes in your room before going to sleep, and always use mosquito nets and coils when you are camping or planning on sleeping outdoors.
