Feeling peckish? You will be after reading this. Because after a swelteringly hot day in the blazing African sun, you’ll be looking for somewhere to quench your parched lips and fill your aching stomach. Fortunately, there’s just such a place.

Of course, there a hundreds of great places to eat in Kenya, but perhaps one of the more unusual restaurants deserves a detailed mention. I’m talking specifically about a place that specialises in meat – a barbecue extravaganza with a pitfull of succulent, delicious cuts from animals that one might not normally expect.

Carnivore is the name of this magical, meaty metropolis. It’s an indoor and open air eatery serving lunch and dinner from 12:30pm – 2pm and 6:30pm – 9:30pm respectively. Prices, for some, may be a little steep; however, you really do get what you pay for. It’s an all-you-can-eat sort of place and when you see the menu, you’re more than likely to accept the ever-tempting challenge to over-stuff yourself.

Now, the part you’ve been waiting for. “What’s actually on this menu?” I hear you cry. Well, how about some crocodile? Ostrich, possibly? Sausages, spare ribs, lamb and slabs of beef are other options, but think of virtually any animal (within reason, obviously) and the staff at Carnivore can provide for you. Served on an African Maasai sword (having been roasted on a huge open charcoal pit which sits at the entrance of the restaurant) they will slice pieces off and lay them on a sizzling plate for you. Watching the food being prepared is always a pleasure as well, especially since the meat cuts are so unusual. Salads and a choice of vegetable side dishes are also available.

To finish off this meat marathon, why not sample the Carnivore cocktail? A refreshing smidge of quality vodka with a dash of lime, a sprinkle of sugar, all poured over cool crushed ice will leave you satisfied and rehydrated. They call this drink the Carnivore Dawa. In Kiswahili, “dawa” means medicine. It’ll more than liven up even the bloated of eaters and, perhaps, have them reaching for the menu again to order dessert.

Carnivore really is one Kenya’s finest restaurants; a large variety of meat from a selection of unusual sources. Be sure to check it out when visiting. After all, it wasn’t twice nominated in the global top fifty restaurants for nothing.
